Hi,

Our organization is quite new to using Essential and we have 3 questions about the business layer and its model.

1) How do you relate our group actors (Business Physical) to our Business Capabilities (Conceptual)?

2) How to structure the Business Domain under Business Conceptual? I understand there isn't a right or wrong way but am curious to see how other organizations are doing this? Is it high level and only a couple of domains or more detailed and similar to an org char?

3)We have created capabilities, projects and objectives yet the level of project activity is always showing No Projects when looking at the 'Projects to Business Objective Mapping" view, how to you properly link projects to the capabilities so that they get flagged as low or high appropriately.

Thanks,

Hi Brendan,

1) Group Actors to Bus Caps - we could do this in a number of way:
- via processes - so an organisation performs a process and a process supports a capability]
- via a Stakeholder - all classes have the stakeholder slot where you can associate an Actor to Role Relation - an Actor playing a Role, ie A Team as Capability Owner for example

2) The Business Domain is a means of categorising the business related elements independent of the context in which it is applied. In other words the main groupings of the business, not necessarily the organisational functions. e.g. Invoicing belongs to the Finance domain but may appear in the Sales Order process. So, create the groupings that are relevant to your business which would usually include things such as HR, Finance, Marketing, Trading etc.

3) I'm not sure which view you're referring to, but projects are mapped to elements they are changing (including business capabilities) via Strategic Plans. The Strategic Plan identifies the long term plan and the elements that will change and the Project implements that change. From the Project you can either use the Strategic Plan Supported slot - this will map the project to everything that is being changed in that Strategic Plan. Alternatively you can use the ca_planned_changes slot which allows you to identify specific elements from a Strategic Plan that this project is changing.

Hope that helps
