The Essential download page (https://enterprise-architecture.org/os_download.php) references Protege version 3.5
The Essential project page from Stanford U (https://protege.stanford.edu/products.p ... op-protege) indicates that the latest version is 5.5

Would the latest version work with Essential Open Source?

Hi

You need to use 3.5, we maintain a forked version. 3.5 is frames-based whereas versions after that are OWL-based and don't work with Essential.
