Installation, while not trivial, went pretty smoothly using the very nice supplied documentation. Installed JRE 6, Apache Tomcat 6, Protege 3.3.1, MySQL 5.1.31 in the order specified on WinXP. Took about 2.5 hours and decided to configure for multi-user mode. Felt a little unsure which direction to take on step 8 where it talks about using the default metaproject vs. the essential baseline metaproject and creating an EssentialAM directory. Getting MySQL setup was also a bit of discovery if you are not versant in the DDL required. But in the end, I was able to convert the essential baseline and get it stuffed into MySQL. Now the real fun, attempting to use the tool. The web-based tutorials are great, is there thought of providing an example project that shows a mock business/application model? Perhaps that stunts people's creative thinking in their own terms, but would seem to aid in the learning curve.

Steve,

Thanks for the great feedback. We particularly appreciate it, as it really does help in the further development of the site content and the tools themselves.

To address the questions you raised in your summary:
  • MySQL setup: We did consider packaging a DDL script to create the database needed for the install, however, given the potential variance in databases used by different users (e.g. MySQL, MS SQLServer, Oracle), we took the assumption that users would make use of any graphical tools available for the database of choice (a MySQL admin GUI can be found here).
  • Multi-User Metaproject setup: We have updated the documentation for the Multi-User Installation, which should hopefully make this step a little clearer.
  • Example Project: We always intended to provide a sample project to help users familiarise themselves with the tools. The Essential Project tools have been used to model organisations from a number of different business domains (e.g. retail, logistics, investment management); however, we are keen to make sure that the sample project is of a business domain that would be understandable by a broad enough group of people. For this reason, we have posted a new topic in the Essential Modeler forum to discuss the most appropriate domain and scope for a sample project.
